N SCALE PARTS L to W
This section covers N scale detail parts from the NL and NN series, plus the NP1 plow. The NL series includes a range of headlights, ditch lights, and marker lights for various North American prototypes. These are lost-wax brass castings, so they arrive with a small sprue that must be cut off with a sharp blade. File any remaining nub flat. They are intended for use on N scale locomotives and cabooses, typically replacing molded-on details. For example, NL1 is a single or double headlight that fits many hood units, while NL11 is a BCR ditch light set with an MU stand for modern Canadian units. NL13 is a low-mounted Pyle light for SP steam locomotives. Before gluing, test-fit the part in its mounting hole; you may need to open the hole with a pin vise. Use CA glue or epoxy for a secure bond. These parts suit N scale (1:160) models, but can also be used in larger scales if you are scratchbuilding a small detail.
The NN series comprises number boards for various locomotives. NN1 is for an Alco RS3, NN2 for an FA2, NN3 for a Fairbanks-Morse unit, NN4 for a generic diesel, NN5 for a steam locomotive, and NN6 for an Alco RS (possibly RS11 or RS18). These are thin brass etches or castings that reproduce the number board frame and backing. To install, remove the existing number board from the model if it is molded on, or use them to replace a clear plastic part. The number boards are designed to be painted and then have numbers applied as decals or press-on letters. They can be fitted with a piece of clear styrene behind the openings to simulate glass. For steam, NN5 mounts on the front of the boiler or on the smokebox. These parts are for N scale, but can be adapted to other scales if you scale them up. Always clean the parts with mild solvent before painting to remove any release agent.
NP1 is a Canadian Pacific snow plow, a cast urethane or brass part for N scale. It is a pilot-mounted plow that replaces the standard coupler pilot on a locomotive. To install, remove the existing pilot and coupler box, then attach the plow with screws or adhesive. You may need to trim the plow to fit your specific locomotive model. It is designed for CP locomotives, but can be used on any N scale diesel with a similar pilot. The plow is typically painted with a silver or aluminum base, then masked and painted with the locomotive's road number or striping. This part is a single piece, so minimal preparation is needed. Check the fit before painting, and file any flash from the casting. These parts are for modellers who want to accurately model Canadian Pacific motive power in the transition era or later. They are not compatible with couplers that mount on the pilot, so plan to use a body-mounted coupler.
